UK Steel, the steel manufacturers' association, called on the UK government to introduce a carbon border adjustment mechanism and support the decarbonization of the UK steel industry by purchasing low carbon emitting steel.

The green target for the UK steel industry is that all ore-based steelmaking should be near zero emissions by 2035.

In addition, the UK must implement CBAM or product standards from 2026, green public procurement, and carbon pricing to meet targets.

While government involvement is critical to creating and building a low carbon steel market, it is not through intervention in pricing, as the market will find its price level. Instead, the government should support the market through public procurement of steel.

In addition, the steel industry should implement better scrap sorting techniques to increase the overall availability of higher quality scrap as another priority to help decarbonize the UK steel industry in 2022.
