Cambodia's construction sector revival drives a 44% increase in iron and steel (under HS Code 72) imports compared to the same period a year ago, reaching US$45.53 million in January, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE). This surge contrasts with US$31.61 million recorded in January 2023.

Since late 2023, several dormant construction projects have gradually resumed operations. The construction and real estate landscape in Preah Sihanouk province has notably improved in early 2024 compared to the previous year. Over 360 large buildings remain unfinished, while approximately 160-170 have been completed but are not yet operational.

In 2023, Cambodia's HS Code 72 steel imports totaled US$372.47 million, marking a 3.5% increase from US$359.82 million in 2022. The majority of iron and steel imports for construction originate from Vietnam, China, and Thailand, according to GDCE data.
