Pushed by the government’s active policy and infrastructure development, India’s crude steel production has grown by 35 million tons over the past five years. The country’s crude steel production was expected to increase to 144.3 million tons in 2023-24 from 109.4 million tons in 2019-20, said Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

The Indian government has adopted various measures to stimulate the steel production capacity, including the DMI & SP (Domestically Manufactured Iron and Steel Products) policy. India’s crude steel capacity was expected to reach 300 million tons by 2030-31.

Besides, the Indian government is also working towards decarbonizing the steel industry. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission to realize India’s ambition to become a global leader in green hydrogen production and exports.
