China’s demand for shipbuilding steel is growing steadily, supported by a large backlog of orders, the global shift toward low‑carbon shipping, and continuous upgrades in domestic steel production.

Since 2026, the market has shown a clear difference between products: high‑strength ship plates remain strong in price because of higher technical requirements and stable demand, while regular ship plates stay at lower price levels due to strong competition.

Although new orders once showed some fluctuations, China has made fast progress in high value‑added ships such as LNG carriers and large container vessels, helping the industry stay strong even when global demand changes.

China’s production capacity for medium and heavy plate is now very sufficient, providing a stable supply for shipbuilding and supporting higher technical standards in vessel construction. The current backlog of orders can support several years of production, and it also increases demand for green‑fuel ships and high‑end ship types, which require more steel per vessel.

With high‑strength and special steel now almost fully produced domestically, along with government support for advanced ship design, China’s shipbuilding steel industry is moving from simple volume growth to quality improvement. High‑strength steel, special steel, and low‑carbon steel are expected to become the main drivers of future growth.
