Japan’s JFE Steel launched its new electric furnace at the East Japan Works, Chiba District, on April 29. A completion ceremony for the No. 4 steelmaking plant took place on April 28 to recognize the 15 billion yen investment. This facility focuses on stainless steel production and significantly increases the use of scrap metal as a raw material.
By replacing blast furnace molten iron with scrap, the company expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to roughly 450,000 tons annually. The new equipment expands scrap melting capacity to about six times its previous level, reaching 300,000 tons per year.
This project is a key step in adopting low-carbon processes as JFE Steel works toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 through innovative technological development.
