China’s Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council said that China will cut import tariffs on all types of coal to zero from May 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, aiming to secure energy supply and reduce import costs due to concerns on global surging prices and supply disruption.
The import tariffs on anthracite and coking coal will be dropped to zero from the current 3%, and tariffs on other kinds of coal will be canceled from the current 3-6%.
It was said that Russia’s coal will gain the most benefit from this decision as the country is the second-largest coal supplier after Mongolia last year.
China’s coal imports amounted to around 323.3 million tons in 2021, accounting for roughly 8% of its total consumption.
