According to statistics, Germany’s crude steel production in August dropped by 1% year on year to 2.84 million tons, of which electric arc furnace crude steel output decreased by 1.1% to 707,000 tons, which has slid by 18 consecutive months.

The decrease in Germany’s crude steel production was mainly due to rising energy costs and economic slowdown. The sharply reduced crude steel output in Germany especially showed in medium-sized electrical steel companies.

The government should urgently secure competitive electricity prices for domestic steel mills to reduce their power costs. A suitable steel price level will be backed by enough green electricity and appropriate backup power plants.

In the first eight months of this year, Germany’s steel production amounted to 24.3 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 4.2%.
